Any discussion of technology should be accompanied by a health warning. The 'latest developments' have a nasty habit of being eclipsed. (Rather as my VCR was, as the result of a well-known video chain's decision to devote most of its shelf space to DVDs rather than videos.) This is an example of how, once the take-up of a particular technological development reaches a critical mass, those who have not subscribed come under greater pressure either to do so or accept a narrower choice of products.
